Temptation: A desire to do something, esp. something wrong or unwise
I imagine the person who thought of the word and how he/she must have known the true meaning of it. I was tempted to eat fatty foods for lunch, and I did. This was after a few seconds of weighing the risks and deciding I will not have dinner in result and will go to the gym. Does it mean that there is always a price to pay to falling into temptation?
It feels like its human nature to want, to desire. We always want things, even things we cannot seem to make a plan on how to get. We sometimes want things and once we have them we move onto other things. It’s our nature. Remember the story of the scorpion and frog? I’ve heard it a few times in movies. It goes like this: There was a frog and a scorpion. And the scorpion asked the frog to help him cross the river. The frog hesitated knowing that the scorpion stings and kills. But he thought that if the scorpion stings it, they will both drown and die. He made this point clear to the scorpion. So the frog allowed the scorpion to journey on his back. Halfway across the river, the scorpion stung. As the frog drowned it asked him why? (Insert sad eyes) and the scorpion responded, “it’s in my nature”. It feels so much like human nature to want and desire things. Who doesn’t want anything, show me! So is it a curse because some of those things are wrong? Someone might say it depends whose glasses you’re wearing. We already want things; we don’t need temptation on top of it!
Am writing this because of a movie I re-watched yesterday night. Yes I re- watch movies. Last night is an interesting movie. It’s one of those realistic movies. These things happen. Even to the best of us. You can be happy and still be tempted to do something wrong. We are in constant temptation! It’s exhausting. I should read about the human brain. Because it feels like we have two people in our brains, one that tells you just eat the fries! Live a little. And the other that tells you that eating healthy is better. Why the hustle though? Why can’t we have just one side that makes us wonderful nice people who always do the right thing? I am glad there is that voice in my head that acts as a warning…but here’s the thing, you know it’s bad, you can see the potential of it happening, so why not remove yourself from the encouraging environment?
I keep wondering, why didn’t he just go to his hotel room and sleep? Having drinks with an attractive woman is just call for trouble, entertaining the thought of it. But we do it all the time. We know something “wrong” could happen but we take the risk. It seems we already know long before we even act. It makes me wonder of the times we choose to do what is “wrong” knowingly. Why take the risk? Do we think we can get away with it? Or is it just in our nature?
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think its in our nature to do wrong. I think its in our nature to be tempted. Constantly. And its also in our nature to consider it, even if its on our thoughts. That’s what makes us scary…we always have potential. Its like walking around with a loaded gun. It all comes down in the end to choices…and hopefully the right ones.
